SOME FACTORS INCREASE THE RISK OF DEVELOPING PERIODONTAL DISEASE TOBACCO USE - Smokers are more likely to have periodontal disease and it is more likely to progress faster. SYSTEMIC DISEASES - Diabetes and other diseases can lower the body's resistance to infection and inflammation caused by periodontal bacteria. There also seems to be a link between the inflammation caused by untreated periodontal disease and an increased risk of heart and other cardiovascular diseases. MEDICATIONS - Several drugs, such as calcium channel blockers, anti-seizure medications, bisphosphonates, and hormones, can affect the gums. Some drugs reduce the flow of saliva and increase the risk of periodontal problems. PLAQUE TRAPS - Chipped fillings or worn-out bridges can accumulate plaque and make it difficult to brush and floss effectively. RISKS OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE TO YOUR GENERAL HEALTH: The presence of uncontrolled periodontal disease can complicate chemo- and radiation- therapy.
